About this Event
As part of Ottawa’s annual Doors Open event, Birkett Castle will welcome visitors for a limited time on June 7, 2026. This special occasion allows the public to step inside a historic building that is normally closed, as it serves as the residence of the Hungarian ambassador. Visitors can explore the castle’s unique architecture, learn about its history, and experience its role in diplomatic and cultural life.
Visitors can also enjoy the “Tradition in Photos” exhibition on the embassy’s fence. This joint project by the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble and the Skanzen in Szentendre showcases Hungarian folk culture in a unique way. Csilla Cseke’s photographs, which are on display, are not mere snapshots; by capturing scenes of village life, they present folk art in a new dimension. Viewers can gain a glimpse into a home in Bodrogköz where a young girl is being dressed in festive attire, witness a Székely couple getting ready for the morning and experience the atmosphere of a wedding in Borsod, for example. The stories are conveyed not only through the clothing and movements, but also through the expressions and sincerity of the moments captured.
