About this Event

Join Voce Writer-in-Residence TAYLOR BURNS for the second in a series of free writer drop-in sessions, this one focused specifically on editing and manuscript preparation.

‘The pattern of the thing precedes the thing.’

—VLADIMIR NABOKOV

The saying goes that you should “K*ll your darlings”, cut those lines that are most precious to you because your attachment to them is likely clouding any clear-eyed, cold-hearted judgement. For Taylor, though, this has never sat right. K*ll your darlings, your best lines? Surely keep those?

Using this idea as a starting point, in this session Taylor will share his experience of editing work — both his own and for other writers — and advise on how best to juggle your artistic intentions with the dispassionate alterations you will no doubt be asked to make by agents, editors, publishers.

This drop-in will also cover editing in a more general sense — how to edit with a distinct outcome rather than constant tinkering — as well as how to prepare your manuscript to industry standard. It is thus suited to those writers a little further along in their career, specifically those who have had experience of receiving professional feedback.

This event is supported using public funding by ARTS COUNCIL ENGLAND.

This is one of our WORKSHOP events, with a specific focus on the craft & business of writing, & place-making for writers in the West Midlands.
