Don’t Be So Political is a monthly film series that engages with films through a political lens. Each screening is preceded by an expert Q&A. Hosted by Zach Wortzman“Do you know what fear stands for? False evidence appearing real.”
Searching for work, Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) ambulance chases Los Angeles, filming the horrific happenings of the night.
Gyllenhaal’s deeply unsettling portrayal of a news stringer, driven by insatiable want, chronicles the rise of a grifter hawking insidious intent. Paired with a pitch perfect Riz Ahmed as his equally lost and wholly obedient sidekick Rick, they hurtle through the darkened streets of Los Angeles, barreling past common decency, and descending into a moral void.
Written and directed by Dan Gilroy (Andor) and photographed by Robert Elswit (There Will Be Blood), the film examines the cliff’s edge of masculinity, exposing the tissue paper thin veneer of Bloom’s front of importance and credibility. Given the smallest shred of power, he stretches it to its limit, stopping at nothing to scratch his way a little further up the ladder. A pitch black addition to the auteur film tradition, alongside Blow Up and Rear Window, the film considers the effect of the camera, not only on the subject, but on the cameraperson, and how that divide erodes their humanity. The Nightcrawler will slither under your skin. (ZACH WORTZMAN)
