The Donovan Boxey Trio brings together some of the most talented improvisers in the Mountain West Region. Percussionist Ron Coulter has been playing professionally since 1997. He has toured all around the country and the world performing with artists such as Sam Newsome, Tony Malaby,David Murray, Vinny Golia, and many more. He holds a B.M. and M.M. in percussion
performance from Youngstown State University. Coulter has taught jazz, percussion, and world musics at many schools including Casper College, Southern Illinois University, and Clarion
University. Ron also has his own record label called Kreating SounD that has released over 60 albums.
Hugh Ragin is a master of the trumpet family. He holds a B.M.E. from the University of. Houston, a degree in classical trumpet from Colorado State University and a D.M.A. in jazz studies from CU Boulder. Ragin also studied at Karl Berger’s Creative Music Studio in the late 70s. Hugh has toured with Maynard Ferguson, Anthony Braxton, Roscoe Mitchell, Wadada Leo Smith, and many more. Currently, Ragin is a member of the Art Ensemble of Chicago, one of the most prestigious and influential jazz ensembles in the last 60 years. He also teaches at CU Boulder and most recently was given the Center for African & African American Studies Artist-In-Residence Award.
Saxophonist Donovan Boxey is the youngest of the group but is no stranger to the jazz world. Like Ragin, Boxey studied at Karl Berger’s Creative Music Studio in NY and also has earned a B.M.E. from Central Michigan University. He has also studied privately with world renowned bassist John Lindberg. From 2018 to the present he has been an active member of the Detroit jazz scene. Boxey has performed with many Detroit greats including Dr. Prof.
Leonard King, Ron English, Tony Holland, Skeeter C.R. Shelton, Mike Johnston, Nick Ashton, and Mike Carey. Donovan has been a member of the great Michigan band the Northwoods Improvisers since 2017. Northwoods has just released its most recent album “Unified View” and next year the band will celebrate its 50th year."
