What's working in Singapore & Southeast Asian journalism? Honest discussion with Tom Wright, Bertha Henson and PN Balji.

About this Event

Join an honest conversation on the state of journalism in Singapore and Southeast Asia, with global investigative journalist Tom Wright, media veteran Bertha Henson, and revered newsman PN Balji exploring what’s working and what still needs to change.

We'll talk about:

  • Real investigative work vs publicist journalism
  • Why do some news outlets explain complex stories while others dump quotes
  • Singapore as a base for regional journalism
  • How readers can tell when the media isn't doing its job properly
  • Editorial independence here compared to regional countries

This will be a frank discussion about what works, what's broken, and what needs to change in regional media.

Tom Wright spent twenty years at The Wall Street Journal, breaking major stories like the 1MDB scandal (which became his bestselling book Billion Dollar Whale). Through his studio Project Brazen, he recently exposed a $1.5 billion financial network tied to human trafficking and scam centers in Southeast Asia.

Bertha Henson worked 25 years at Singapore Press Holdings, ending as Associate Editor of The Straits Times. She led editorial training for senior journalists and cofounded The Middle Ground. She now trains journalists and conducts writing workshops for government agencies and companies.

PN Balji is a veteran journalist, well-known for his strong leadership and honest reporting. During his career, he served as the editor of two major Singapore newspapers, The New Paper and Today. In his memoir, Reluctant Editor, he shares an honest, insider's look at how the media works in Singapore and its relationship with the government.
