About this Event
Dogs have been part of Salem’s story for over four hundred years—not just as companions, but as workers, protectors, and witnesses to the city’s evolution. Today, Salem is one of the most dog-friendly cities in the region—but that didn’t happen by accident.
Hosted by Tails of Salem as part of Salem400+, this free, one-hour guided walking experience offers a new way to explore the city’s history through the lens of dogs. From the fear and superstition of 1692, through the structured world of law and industry, to the rise of companion animals and modern dog-friendly culture, this walk reveals how dogs have shaped—and reflected—the story of Salem over four centuries.
Space is limited—advance registration is required. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome.
