About this Event
Join us at the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art (YSMA) for a special screening of DELA (The Making of El Anatsui), a profound and beautifully crafted documentary celebrating one of Africa’s most influential contemporary artists. Presented in partnership with Africa Related, this event marks the grand finale of Lagos Gallery Weekend (LGW 2026) at the museum.
DELA offers an intimate, moving, and visually arresting exploration of the life and artistic journey of El Anatsui, Africa’s most globally celebrated sculptor of the 21st century. More than a biography, the film is a tribute to the cultural depth and creative brilliance that define the artist’s practice—work that has reshaped global conversations about sculpture, form, and artistic freedom.
The name “Dela,” meaning “Deliverer” in the Ewe language, captures the heart of the story. Foretold at birth to be a deliverer, Anatsui has indeed transformed the artistic landscape—delivering new possibilities for generations of artists across West Africa and beyond. Through teaching, mentoring, and an open studio practice that welcomed community members into the creative process, his impact extends far beyond his monumental installations.
This documentary journeys through the trials, triumphs, and deeply human experiences that shaped both the man and the legend. It brings forward the voices of those who have walked alongside him—friends, studio assistants, students, and community members—revealing the layers of simplicity, complexity, and quiet brilliance that define Anatsui’s world.
