Doc Rowe has been documenting British Cultural tradition for over sixty years. Using video, film and photography as well as audio, his unique collection of contemporary and historical material on the traditional culture, song and dance of the British Isles and Ireland is well known and now widely recognised. After an overwhelming and successful crowdfunding bid last year, all Doc’s moving image collection has now been digitised. Although it only represents about four-per-cent of the entire archive collection, it does mean for the first time all this is more readily accessible
In this unusual all-day workshop, which represents a first public viewing of much of the material, it is a rare and valuable opportunity for participants to explore and personally request material to be shown. Doc will begin the day by illustrating and reflecting on half-a-century of interest and involvement; from the early song revival in his native Devon through to seasonal events for which he is mainly known [this does include our own Lewes Bonfire Society celebrations]. He will then be open to requests, suggestions and interrogation from the floor. Foremost, this is seen as a celebration of many events and performers captured on film and tape; it will feature many of the great singers and musicians that have inspired us including local performers: Bob Copper, Johnny Doughty, Gordon Hall etc. and elsewhere Willie Scot, Ray Fisher, Cyril Tawney, Peter Bellamy … and the list can go on. Importantly, there will be a discussion of relationships with those ‘documented’ performers and, in most cases, this will be the only existing footage of them, since the media was simply not interested in our music . Sadly, they are not here to see themselves so celebrated.
Doc also sings and he will be joining his partner, Jill Pidd at the evening folk club.
