About this Event
DMICS Presents: The Planet on the Table
The Del Mar International Composers Symposium (DMICS) opens its fifth season with San Diego favorites the Hausmann Quartet performing two major works: Martin Bresnick's Fourth String Quartet "The Planet on the Table," and DMICS Founder Jordan Kuspa's Third String Quartet, receiving its West Coast premiere.
DMICS exists to encourage the sharing of new musical ideas between composers, performers, and the community, and to present the best new concert music from around the world in the City of Del Mar. In particular, DMICS is designed to allow composers and performers a space to collaborate intimately on the creation and presentation of new works, while inviting the public to experience that process first-hand. DMICS is a sponsored program of the Del Mar Foundation. For more information, please visit delmarcomposers.org.
Artist Bios:
Martin Bresnick’s compositions, from opera, chamber, and symphonic music to film scores and computer music, are performed throughout the world. Bresnick’s numerous prizes and citations include the American Academy of Arts and Letters, The Rome Prize, The Berlin Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a Koussevitzky Commission. As Charles T. Wilson Professor in the Practice of Music at Yale, Bresnick is well recognized as an influential teacher of composition and has mentored dozens of composers who are now leaders in the field and winners of Pulitzers, Guggenheims, Rome Prizes, and GRAMMYs.
Jordan Kuspa, composer, cellist, and conductor, founded the Del Mar International Composers Symposium in 2019. Kuspa’s compositions have been performed across North America, Europe, and Asia, and have been praised as “animated and melodically opulent” and “consistently alive and inspired” by the New York Times. Kuspa studied at Rice University and received his doctorate from the Yale School of Music.
The Hausmann Quartet has established itself as an integral part of the cultural life of Southern California since its arrival in San Diego in 2010. Faculty Artists-in-Residence at San Diego State University, their latest endeavor is Haydn Voyages: Music at the Maritime, a quarterly concert series on a historic ferry boat exploring the string quartet repertoire through Haydn’s quartet cycle.
