Born in Ruston, Louisiana, Harrell was inspired by blues legends like B.B. King, Albert King, Muddy Waters, and Freddie King. He began playing guitar at 12 and writing songs by 16, eventually earning the B.B. King of the Blues Award for Preserving Traditional Blues Heritage and the Blues Music Award for Best Emerging Artist.
