About this Event

Djoukil is a group of five fantastic French musicians joined by their common passion for the music of Django Reinhardt style Gypsy Jazz and American Swing mixed with some ballads "à la Française". Their favorite era being the jazz/swing rhythms and melodies of the 1940s makes them a much sought after band for swing dances, festivals and concerts in France and in the U.S.!

Djoukil is a French jazz swingtet founded in 2008. Their influences come from three different styles: Gypsy Jazz, New Orleans and Big Bands.

“Swing Manouche”: this French-style jazz, born of the encounter between American swing and traditional European music, was initiated by Django Reinhardt in the 1930s. With a concern for authenticity and respect for tradition, Djoukil offers French music and songs as close as possible to the work of Django Reinhardt.

“New-Orleans & Big Bands”: from 2017, following trips to the United States during which Djoukil was able to immerse himself in these styles in their cradles. The musicians decided to appropriate the New-Orleans and Big Bands repertoire by creating original arrangements.

The group grows and is enriched by a new, fuller line-up, becoming a Swingtet. The original link between this music and dance enables the group to perpetuate the tradition of Swing Balls.

Charleston, Lindy-Hop and Balboa dancers will find the melodies and rhythms of this lively music created by great composer-arrangers such as Fats Waller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and many others.
