Happy Birthday to prolific pianist, composer and arranger Mary Lou Williams, "the Lady Who Swings The Band", born May 8, 1910 in Atlanta, Georgia. At the age of 13 she was already playing with Duke Ellington, and at 19 she became the centerpiece of Andy Kirk's Twelve Clouds of Joy, which under William's musical influence came to epitomize the "Kansas City style" of swing. She was later hugely influential as a teacher and mentor for the likes of Miles Davis, Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk. Look out for some Mary Lou Williams compositions on Thursday!
ADMISSION
• FREE for all Intro to Swing students (Swing 1, Swing 2 and Swing for Queer Folks).
• $5 for all other RCP and UBC Swing club students.
• $10 at the door ($5 if you're coming from Showboat).
• Free admission if you've never danced before - bring your friends and we'll gladly show you the basics!
• No one turned away for lack of funds. Volunteers always dance for free, sign up for a shift at the door!
A portion of our revenue goes to payyourrent.ca, a multi-nation Indigenous-led project to receive payment from settlers. Our classes and events take place on the stolen land of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.
Please be considerate of others’ decision to mask or not, and be prepared to put on a mask as a courtesy to your dance partner if they request it. Stay home if you feel unwell. Thank you for helping us keep our community safe. Oh and don't forget to bring your own water bottle!
