Since late 2025, the United States government has deployed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to progressive cities nationwide to intimidate immigrant families and communities of color. In January of 2026, the killing of Renee Good and Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, Minnesota drew global attention to ICE brutality during what was touted as “the largest immigration enforcement operation ever carried out” by the Department of Homeland Security.
Simultaneously, detained individuals continue to face dehumanizing conditions in ICE custody—causing the deaths of 16 people in 2026 alone as of early April—while the families of those detained and members of vulnerable communities are experiencing major financial, emotional, and health-related hardship. This situation is likely to intensify as detention facilities expand across states like Texas and ICE agents move on to target new cities.
Despite ongoing needs, mutual aid for communities affected by ICE in Minnesota has slowed. As ICE has scaled back its presence in the state and the news cycle has moved on to other pressing issues, many families face the compounded challenges of legal fees, loss of income, and trauma from the ICE occupation. We in Taiwan feel called to action to demonstrate solidarity and contribute however we can to support those impacted by and standing against ICE, in Minnesota and beyond.
