About this Event
The Web of Life on Life Support traces the ties that bind Canada’s ecological crisis and the ever-growing crisis of law and governance. As ecosystems are pushed past their breaking point, environmental racism means that Indigenous and racialized people suffer most. This talk traces how the dismantling of environmental protections puts ecosystems, communities, and Indigenous rights at direct risk.
Often, as forests, wetlands, species, and water systems face mounting pressure and strands in the web of life begin to fray, it is seen as an ‘environmental problem’ – but it is a human problem. Ecological harms are connected to governance and impact governance. Ecological harms are shared by all but are not shared equally.
How can we maintain robust public participation in an age of expedited economic development? How can we strengthen democracy while protecting our web of life? How can we avoid environmental racism while tackling an inequality crisis? Some thoughts and examples will be discussed.
