In-person and online.Professor Peter Fineran will present his Distinguished Research Medal lecture titled: Phage-bacterial interactions: From biology to applications.
About Professor Peter Fineran's research:
Peter Fineran is a Professor at the University of Otago, New Zealand and leads the Phage-host interactions (Phi) laboratory. He obtained a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry from the University of Canterbury, NZ, then completed his PhD and post-doctoral training at the University of Cambridge, UK. His research focuses on two core areas: (1) bacterial defence mechanisms, including CRISPR-Cas and other diverse systems, and (2) phage strategies that evade these defences. He applies his fundamental research findings to translational areas, including (1) developing phage-based antimicrobial approaches, and (2) harnessing CRISPR-Cas systems for biotechnological innovation. Peter has published more than 140 articles, has filed multiple patents and received numerous awards in recognition of his research, including the Fleming Prize from the Microbiology Society, UK. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and a current James Cook Research Fellow.
Associate Professor Andrew Reynolds will deliver his Rowheath Trust Award and Carl Smith Research Medal lecture titled: What should I eat? Evidence and action.
About Associate Professor Andrew Reynolds' research:
Associate Professor Andrew Reynolds works with achievable lifestyle and environment change in the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease. His research at present is focussed on dietary intakes and relates to topics such as: carbohydrate quality, food processing, food reformulation, support for people who want to lose weight, and objective markers of dietary intake. He primarily conducts randomised controlled trials and meta-analyses. Much of his work is to inform evidence-based guidelines, policy, and lifestyle change.
