We are delighted to be holding a distaff spinning workshop at the Oxfordshire Museum early in the New Year.
The day will begin with a look at the evidence for the use of a long distaff for spinning wool from the 12th century through to the Industrial Revolution. You will then learn to dress a distaff and spin from it, firstly with the in-hand technique and then the short suspension technique. We will also look at the use of wool combs as a means of prepping fibre for the distaff.
All tools and materials will be provided on the day and may be purchased to take home at the end of the workshop.
