About this Event

Warrington Castle may be long lost from the landscape, but its story has not disappeared.

This evening explores the evidence for Warrington’s medieval castle and the methods used to investigate its location responsibly and carefully.

Taking place, Thursday 26th March, 6pm until 730pm, at The Bulls Head, Church Street, Warrington.

Beginning with a short summary of the Warrington Castle Collective’s recent activities – including Heritage Open Days, community engagement and ongoing research – the talk will then examine the historical and archaeological evidence behind the castle’s story.

We will look at:

Documentary references and medieval sources.
Kendrick’s early excavations and 19th-century interpretations.
Map regression and landscape analysis.
Modern survey techniques including drone modelling and geophysics.
How archaeological assessment works in practice.

Rather than rushing to conclusions, this event focuses on the process of discovery, how historians and archaeologists test ideas, build evidence, and proceed responsibly.

The evening will conclude with a short outline of the project’s next phase, including ongoing archaeological assessment and the potential for future community involvement.

Community Supporter Membership of the Warrington Castle Collective will formally launch at this event.

There will be time for Q&A, and attendees are welcome to bring a small historical object, document or photograph connected to Warrington’s past for brief discussion.
