About this Event

Discover the Secret Life of Rocks!

A Hands-On Workshop for All Ages

Ever wondered what’s actually inside the rocks beneath your feet—or even in the food you eat? Join us for an interactive exploration into the world of geology and discover how we rely on minerals every single day.

🔍 What We’ll Explore Together

  • The Big Three: We’ll start by passing around samples and learning the three main rock classifications.
  • The "Kitchen" of Geology: We will show you how granite is formed using the analogy of baking a cake!
  • Mineral Magic: Discover how over 4,000 minerals combine to form the Earth. Some lucky junior geologists will help build "rocks" using our special mineral kits.
  • Up Close & Personal: Use professional magnifiers to study color, texture, cleavage, and crystal shapes.
  • The Glow Factor: Learn the science behind why certain rocks appear fluorescent under UV light.
  • The Grand Finale: Prepare to be amazed by our "Magic Floating Rock"!

Questions are always welcome! We can’t wait to see you there and dig into the science of geology together.

  • Members & Kids: FREE
  • Nonmembers: $5.00 (plus Eventbrite fee)
  • Cancellation Policy: If you cannot attend, please cancel via Eventbrite so we can offer your spot to someone on the waiting list.

Register early to secure your spot.

Facilitator: Karen Davis

Karen is a retired school librarian and member of Owyhee Gem & Mineral Society in Canyon County. She is a voracious reader and has immersed herself in the world of rocks and minerals. She enjoys finding them in the field, cutting them, polishing them, and studying them under magnifiers. She now shares her passion by teaching students about rocks, minerals and geology. She has visited schools across the Treasure Valley, giving presentations to over 2,400 young people in the past 3 years. Her presentations are informative in a fun, interactive, hands-on way.
