Experience the history and heritage of the city of Durham and the living museum of the north at Beamish. Durham is a a wonderful place to explore with ancient winding streets packed with history, culture and stunning architecture, including the magnificent Norman Castle and Cathedral.
We also visit the Bowes Museum, housed in a grand 19th-century French-style château, boasting an impressive collection of fine arts, ceramics and decorative pieces, including the famous Silver Swan automation. In the morning we visit Barnard Castle, a medieval fortress o ering stunning views of the River Tees and the surrounding countryside.
A day visit to Auckland Castle and its gardens offers a glimpse into the historic residence of the Bishops of Durham, with stunning landscapes and beautifully restored interiors. Nearby, Locomotion in Shildon showcases the history of railways, featuring fascinating locomotives and interactive exhibits that highlight the region's industrial heritage celebrating 200 years in 2025!
