About this Event
Speakers: Drs. Clare Uytman and Sian Jones are chartered psychologists, working at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. Since 2020, grounded in living experience of being disabled, we have been exploring and developing educational resources designed to directly tackle representation and understanding of disability through play and imagination as supported by previous research. This session is intended to increase confidence in talking about disability with diverse learners and developing their own disability literacy knowledge and skills. For more information, please look at their website: https://qmutoyboxdiversitylab.com/
This webinar is for: practitioners, students, other stakeholders in education, with a particular focus on Early Years, Level 1 and Level 2 learners, although broader discussions will be relevant to all education settings.
Summary: Ableism is pervasive in educational settings, reflected in structural inequalities, such as the low representation of disabled people in the education workforce. At the same time, educators report that they don't feel confident talking about disability in the classroom. In this webinar, psychologists Drs. Sian Jones and Clare Uytman, will share their research and resources. These free and accessible resources have been co-created with invested stakeholders for use in schools and community settings, mapped to the Curriculum for Excellence. The resources are intended to help educators to introduce the topic of ableism as a human rights concern, to offer reflection and insight, and to foster constructive conversations about disability inequality with children.
