About this Event
Our first event in our new series of 'Directions' events for 2026 is a fantastic masterclass in feature documentary filmmaking with director Kim Hopkins and producer Margareta Szabo!
Kim and Margareta, after opening Sheffield DocFest 2026 and fresh off their brand new commercial release of 'Still Pushing Pineapples' will deliver this masterclass exclusively for SYFN members in Sheffield! And you will get the chance to network with them after the event too.
In 2012, producer Margareta Szabo and director Kim Hopkins founded Labor of Love Films out of a shared belief that powerful documentary storytelling could come from outside the industry centre and from lived experience, not privilege, and over the years they have built a deeply personal body of work including Hotel Folly(BBC Storyville), Voices of the Sea (POV, PBS), A Bunch of Amateurs (BBC Storyville) and Still Pushing Pineapples (Sheffield DocFest 2025's Opening film), while now developing The Local, and they now use everything they have learned, the setbacks, the risks, the persistence and the breakthroughs, to encourage others and share honest, practical insight into how a feature documentary can grow from a fragile idea into a finished film that reaches audiences.
This is going to be a super-informative, fun enjoyable afternoon. Interested in documentaries? Want to meet some of the most dynamic doc-makers in the North? This is an event not to be missed!
