OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Guy Nicholls, Chairman of Tru7 Group
Guy started his career as a young boy working for his dad, Percy, who had a truck hire company. He says they had quite a volatile relationship, but it just put fire in his belly and motivated him to work harder. He later ran the new plant hire service in Ipswich alongside his sister, and when Percy died suddenly in 1997, they took over the family business. After selling part of the business in 2015, Guy used his share of the proceeds to launch TRU7 as a “hobby”.
They say if you find a job you enjoy doing, you’ll never have to work a day in your life - and Guy loves doing a deal!
What began by offering just tipper and truck hire, has since organically grown to be a successful and diverse business, with divisions in plant hire and sales, demolition, earthworks, aggregates and more.
A huge influence in his life, Guy says his father had always wanted to be seen as an upstanding businessman, and taught him that reputation matters – something he carries with him to this day.
Jake Nicholls, CEO of Tru7 Group
Guy’s son, Jake, joined Tru7 in his mid-twenties after giving up competing internationally as a motorcross rider. He had raced motorbikes from when he was just three, having inherited a passion for the sport from his dad, and after turning professional at the age of 15, he quickly became one of the top riders in the world.
His Dad had always wanted him to be part of the family business, but Jake resisted until he was injured competing in Italy at the age of 27. With his sporting career at an end, it was time to make a choice about his future.
Guy had recently launched TRU7, so in 2017, Jake joined as an Operations Director - but learned on the job, from the ground up. He had ‘chosen’ to join - it wasn’t pre-destined - and he wanted to earn his position through hard graft. It is fair to say that he is not afraid to get his hands dirty.
Nearly a decade later, as the third generation in the family business, he is focused on driving the TRU7 Group forward, seizing opportunities, modernising and thinking about succession.
