In February 2003 an album came out on Sub Pop with no band or tour to support it.
Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie) and Jimmy Tamborello started trading files on burned CDRs through the mail in December 2001. Gibbard said that the process of just reacting to and editing instrumentals from Tamborello freed him from his writing process for Death Cab and let him follow his muse to place it didn’t ordinarily take him.
The songs on Give Up are both intimate and alienating. Organic and mechanical.
For a certain cohort the album was an inexplicable part of the scenery as they came of age. And what at first seemed like a novelty bedroom pop collaboration paved the way for some much modern indie pop.
Never conceived of as a live band The Postal Service- Give Up is a unique chance for Diaspora Radio to do what it does best: bring you into a room to experience an entire album in one sitting with a room full of friends and strangers.
