Diabetes Foundations Class
Exclusively offered to Stanford Medicine Children's Health Registered Nurses.
DESCRIPTION
- The Diabetes Foundations class provides education to inpatient nursing on patients admitted with Type I & II, steroid induced, and secondary Diabetes. The class covers nursing considerations for the care of these patients, technologies for management of Diabetes, and patient education.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the course, the participant will be able to:
- Explain the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes
- Teach how to use home blood glucose meter
- Support carbohydrate counting for children with diabetes
- Teach the administration of insulin injections
- Teach the treatment of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia
- Teach the basics of diabetes self management
- Explain what are insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitor, and when to expect to start using these devices
CONTINUING EDUCATION
This continuing education (CE) course is offered through Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford by the Center for Professional Excellence and Inquiry (CPEI). Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN), Provider Number 9713.
Center for Professional Excellence and Inquiry is accredited as provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC).
- Number of BRN Contact Hours: 3.75 hours
- Number of ANCC Contact Hours: 3.75 hours
TARGET AUDIENCE
- Stanford Medicine Children's Health RNs: PCU 200, 300, 360, 400, 500, 520, and PEC
REGISTRATION and FEES
- Stanford Children's RN (with CE credit) = $60 (plus admin fees)
- Stanford Children's RN (with no CE credit) = FREE
- For employment verification, please register using your Stanford work email and employee ID number.
- The Center for Professional Excellence and Inquiry (CPE&I) accepts card payments ONLY for course fees and materials. Transfer of Funds are no longer accepted. Employees seeking reimbursement for educational expenses must obtain their manager's approval through AccessHR. CHANGES ON REGISTRATION

- Join Waitlist: Please note that being on the waitlist does not guarantee enrollment to the course but it certainly increases your chances when an opening becomes available. Our waitlist is maintained on a first-come, first-served basis. Upon seat availability, you will be contacted automatically with further instructions on how to register.
CANCELLATION and REFUND
- FULL REFUND for cancellations at least 2 weeks prior to course date.
- PARTIAL REFUND for cancellations less than 2 weeks prior to course date. A $35 cancellation fee will be deducted from the total amount you have paid.
- NO REFUND for cancellations less than 5 days prior to course date.
- NO SHOWS and cancellations less than 5 days before scheduled Part 2 will be charged a $35 cancellation fee. Registrant will receive an invoice from CPE&I.
- NO SHOWS or cancellations on the day of class are considered unexcused absences. Managers will be notified. A medical note may be required in the event of illness or medical emergencies.
- Cancellation by CPEI: Schedules, venues and details are subject to change and cancellation. Registered participants will be provided with as much advance notice as possible if this should occur. If CPEI cancels class, full refund will be given.
