About this Event
Three 20 minute talks by our experts in sociology, focusing on key elements in the Year 12 and 13 curriculum. Each talk will be followed by a brief Q&A. Attendees are welcome to ask further questions at the end.
Programme
Who does the domestic labour? Dr Emily Christopher
In this talk, I explore how the pandemic has influenced the way couples divide specific housework and childcare tasks, and how far these experiences have impacted the gendered divisions of domestic labour for couples in the long term.
Children’s time use and gender socialisation: 40 years of transformation? Dr Killian Mullan
In this talk I will examine change and stability in children’s (8-16 years) time use over a 40-year period since the mid-70s. I explore how daily life influences gender socialisation, and how this has changed over a period marked by increasing gender equality in our society (among adults).
What does religion have to do with the sociology of education? Dr Céline Benoit
One of our fundamental roles as sociologists of education is to investigate how inequalities may be reproduced by the education system, often focusing on race/ethnicity, social class, and gender. But what about religion? In this talk, I will reflect on how religion may be a locus of power in education, and how it is central to how we construct the ‘self’ and the ‘Other’ in contemporary Britain.
