Summary:

As people professionals working in the current health and care landscape, the term ‘system’ is

likely to be an increasingly regular focus in your work and practices. Whether it is ‘the health

and care system’, or ‘systems working’, ‘systems thinking’, even the ‘integrated care system’ it

has become part of routine health and care vocabulary. But what does system working mean?

And how do you approach it for success? This workshop brings together experts from the fields

of systems thinking, systems working, and systems leadership to work with participants to

explore this further.


Objectives:

1. Participants will learn what is meant by 'systems working'.

2. Participants will consider why it is important in the current health and care landscape.

3. Participants will explore how systems working relates to modern HR and OD practice.

4. Participants will be supported to consider their own HR and OD practices and how they can

apply examples of good practice across the country for systems working and collaboration.


Who this workshop is for:

This workshop is for any HR or OD professional who is interested in hearing about this area of

high importance for health and care practice and interested to consider how to modernize

their own practices to be more ready to face the challenges of now as well as for the future

in more innovative and collaborative ways for success.


Facilitators:

The session will be run by three facilitators: Professor Dr Durka Dougall, Dr Abraham George

and Leigh Elliott. Their photos and bios are provided overleaf for information.


Professor Dr Durka Dougall

Durka is a medical consultant and a systems development specialist. She is an

influential BAME health and care leader in UK with over 25 years' experience. She is

the founder and CEO of the Centre for Population Health; Acting Deputy Chair for

two NHS Trusts, Chair of The Health Creation Alliance; a Professor of Population

Health and Public Health supporting University College London and University of East

London, and a leadership development expert supporting clinical, board and system

development across UK and internationally. For the last 10 years, Durka has been

leading efforts to develop leadership capability across UK and more globally. She

has supported many individuals, boards, and systems and is proud to be

recognised as a trusted leader in this space.


Dr Abraham George

Abraham is a public health consultant who has been working in Kent since 2010. He is well established leader for collaborative working for health of the Kent & Medway Integrated Care System. He advises both national and local systems about population health management including the award-winning Kent Integrated Dataset programme and has been promoting the importance of local data partnership and use of locally linked health administrative datasets for advanced analytics such as complex care evaluation, predictive and simulation modelling using systems dynamics. Abraham is training lead for the department having led the expansion of training placements offering to GPs, junior doctors, medical students, senior researchers.

Since 2010, he is consultant lead and advisor to the NHS on Individual Funding Requests, Clinical Effectiveness and Kent County strategic lead on the JSNA and Public Health Intelligence. He is also the consultant lead for the Research Innovation & Improvement function in Local Authority Public Health for the department, overseeing a growing number of research activities to support public health practice.

Leigh Elliott

Leigh Elliott is currently the Chief Executive of the North East’s largest regional children’s charity. She undertook the role in 2019 whilst the charity was in financial crisis, and then carried it through a pandemic. The charity has now doubled in staffing size and substantially increased its turnover with a clear 5-year strategy.

Having witnessed from childhood how injustice impacts on the most vulnerable in our society, Leigh advocates children’s views being heard at a strategic level. She has worked in the Public, Private, Education, Health and the Third sector. Amongst these sectors she has worked for St Marys Hospital in Stannington, Northumbria Police Headquarters, John Lewis and Rolls Royce. She sits on many strategic boards with various different hats, has two masters degrees one in Strategic HR Management and one in Strategic Leadership.

Leigh is passionate about children and fighting injustice. Leigh likes to cook and enjoys meals around the table with her family, she has two children in their 20’s who she is extremely proud of. She has recently joined a North Sea wild swimming group and enjoys being out in nature on walks with her Border Terrier Alfie.
