Before becoming one of America’s most influential architects, Kahn trained in the Detroit offices of George D. Mason and Zachariah Rice, where he rose from apprentice to chief designer between 1884 and 1896.This lecture will shine a spotlight on Mason’s own extraordinary legacy. After parting ways with Rice at the turn of the century, Mason went on to design some of Detroit’s most iconic landmarks, including the Charles T. Fisher Mansion, the Detroit Yacht Club, and the Gem Theatre. He also collaborated with Kahn on the Belle Isle Aquarium and the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory around 1901.
