About this Event
The Dark Dark by Samantha Hunt
This is the 1st of a 3 book cycle.
Detention is a book club for two types of people.
1. People who love books but as soon as the book is assigned, they are never going to read it.
2. People who love books but hate it when they join a book club and no one else reads the book.
Detention is not a book club for people who want to talk about their baby, their cat, or sit around drink wine and do anything but talk about the book! If you didn't read the book that's okay, we will be providing quality summaries and ample gudiance so you can participate without feeling guilty.
If you did read the book! You're in good hands because so did we! And we can't wait to listen, argue, and discuss.
Allison Barrett: The Poetic Pilferer
Once upon a time, Allison's pockets were full of book titles from her college bookstore job. Now, with three kids and a full-time gig, she's mastered the art of speed-reading at library book sales. An MFA in poetry means she can wax lyrical about weird short stories faster than you can say "magical realism."
Ashar Foley: The Academic Accomplice
Ashar's brain is a dusty pop culture treasure trove with a Ph.D. in 19th-century boredom (yes, really). When she's not corrupting young minds at Fordham University, she's probably reading about dental hygiene or devastating German novels. Expect non-fiction picks that'll make your neurons high-five.
Daniel Andrew Boyd: The Narrative Ne'er-do-well
Daniel's spent more time in detention than you have, and he's got the stories to prove it. When he's not helping people spin yarns about their lives, he's hosting shows and podcasts. He's here to dissect narratives faster than you can say "unreliable narrator."
The Homework (The Books We're Tackling)
- "The Dark Dark" by Samantha Hunt. Weird, wild, and wonderfully unsettling. It's like a fever dream you'll actually want to remember.
- "Doppelganger" by Naomi Klein. Identity crisis meets political commentary. It's like looking in a funhouse mirror and seeing the world reflected back.
- "Exhalation" by Ted Chiang. Sci-fi that'll make your brain do backflips. Warning: will cause existential pondering.
Why Join Detention?
- No More FOMO: Missed the last meeting? No worries. Our summaries and Discord chats keep you in the loop. It's like SparkNotes, but cooler and not rendered obsolete by ChatGPT.
- Brain Food with a Side of Fun: Our hosts serve up bite-sized lectures that'll make you feel smarter without the homework hangover.
- Find Your Tribe: Connect with fellow book lovers who get your obscure literary references. Finally, someone who understands why you're still not over that character's death!
The Fine Print (Because We're Rebels, Not Anarchists)
- This book club lasts 3 months. That's shorter than most New Year's resolutions!
- You don't have to read the book, but you do have to show up. It's called Detention for a reason.
- No actual detention will be served. Unless you count being detained by fascinating discussions.
