Join us for a two-day, hands-on workshop exploring how detection dogs are trained and deployed at NHU Ecology and Detection Dogs. This workshop is designed for anyone curious about detection dog work or looking to try something new with their pet so no previous experience required.
Day One: Foundations of Detection Dog Training
The first day focuses on the essential foundations of detection dog training, with live demonstrations from our operational detection dogs. Participants will learn about:
Play-based training methods
Building strong indications
Foundation search development
You’ll also have the opportunity to put your handling skills to the test by working with an operational detection dog. For those with more experienced dogs, we will cover troubleshooting common training challenges.
Day Two: Developing the Search
On the second day: Beginner dogs will continue developing foundational search skills using food or toy-based games. More experienced dogs will progress to searching on odour.
Handlers are welcome to continue working with our operational detection dogs on this day as well. You’ll also have the chance to harness your own dog’s “inner search dog,” whether through simple foundation games or more advanced odour searches, depending on your dog’s experience level.
