It is thought that about 15–20 percent of the population is neurodiverse. Yet, according to the UK based National Autistic Society, 45% of neurodivergent people have lost, or left their job because of challenges due to being misunderstood; today, only 1 in 16 autistic adults are in full time employment. This seminar builds on the author's work for the British Council for Office's commission 'Designing for Neurodiversity' to examine the needs of the neurodiverse workforce. The talk will focus on the framing of neurodiversity as a social justice issue and the key role that the office development, design, and management ecosystem has in supporting neurodivergent people to lead equitable, healthy, and prosperous lives. Josh will cover the history of the neurodiversity movement, the biological relationship between health and place, a more ethical and accurate framing of neurodiversity, and some examples of how better thinking results in more inclusive places.

Speaker: Josh Artus

Josh is the Urban Strategy lead for Centric Lab which is an independent UK based lab prototyping ways to use health-based scientific evidence to support justice movements. Centric Lab uses neuroscience and environmental data to identify how biological inequity contributes to poor health outcomes, they use this research to build open-access community tools, create new narratives and framings of health, and provide organisations with expertise and insights on health and place.
