Designing Options for Interaction: Accessible Design Instead of "Retrofitting"
Instructional Designer and Instructor of Disability Studies
University of Michigan - Dearborn and Goodwin University
Join Sarah Silverman for an interactive webinar exploring the . As part of the general variability among learners, learners navigate and interact with learning materials in a variety of ways: They may navigate with a mouse, a track pad, a joystick, and adaptive keyboard, or with their voice. They may interact using pens or pencils, typed text, screen readers, and many other methods. When materials are not designed in an accessible way, students who use many of these methods of navigation and interaction cannot access them, except through "retrofitting," or post-facto attempts to create access. In this webinar, participants will explore the relationship between UDL consideration 4 (Design options for interaction) and the updates to ADA Title II which now require digital materials to be accessible to people with disabilities. Participants will engage in three applied case studies which demonstrate how teaching with accessible learning materials is an opportunity to advance equity while developing familiarity with a variety of adaptive tools.
