A guide to the issues concerning transfer slabs and approaches to design and assessment.
About this Event

Reinforced concrete transfer slabs have been prevalent in residential, mixed use and hotel construction since circa 2000. Research by IStructE indicated a gap in Code coverage of this structural form, along with some poor design practice. As a result, the IStructE published “Design of Transfer Slabs” in November 2024. The guide has been downloaded over 5,000 times. Since its publication the BSR has issued a warning on transfer slabs in existing buildings.

The Institution is working on guidance for the assessment of existing structures. IStructE Technical Director Patrick Hayes will describe the design issues with transfer slabs, focusing on punching shear, and outline guidance on the design slab and assessment of existing slabs.
