Join us in celebrating the life of Derek Kyle McRobertsDerek Kyle McRoberts (May 14, 1985 – April 12, 2026) was a son, father, partner, and friend whose presence brought humor, thoughtfulness, and genuine connection to those around him.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Julie McRoberts, and is survived by his father, Dane Fjelstad of Madison; his sister, Arianna Fjelstad; his beloved son, Aldo Ceylan of Duisburg, Germany; his former spouse, Indira Ceylan of Duisburg, Germany; his partner, Geanah Shaw of Madison; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Derek graduated from Madison East High School and the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and honorably served in the United States Army National Guard. He worked for Cascade Asset Management and the Wisconsin Department of Justice, where he was known for his dedication and integrity.
Derek had a sharp mind and a great sense of humor. He loved history, Legos, board games, puzzles, and meaningful conversations about the world around him. More than anything, he valued the people in his life. His friendships were deep and lasting, and the time spent together—laughing, debating, and simply being present—meant everything to him.
In one of his final moments, while sitting at the kitchen table working on a Minecraft puzzle his son had given him, Derek was asked what he was doing. He gestured toward the empty chairs where friends had gathered the night before and said, “I’m just waiting for my crew.” It’s a simple, beautiful reflection of how much he loved being surrounded by the people who mattered most.
It was Derek's wish to have friends and family share a special moment at Olbrich Botanical Gardens. Friends can enjoy walk through Olbrich Gardens prior to the gathering at Dexter's Pub.
