About this Event

The Great Depression leaves two souls–Gordon Crenshaw in eastern North Carolina and Vesta Blonik in rural Minnesota–without much hope for their future. Gordon, whose family institutionalizes him after the heartbreak of losing his wife and baby in childbirth, can’t see a path forward. Vesta, used to being an afterthought, is abandoned by her father on the family farm. The Crenshaws devise a scheme to bring the two together which radically alters the course of both lives. The Historical Fiction Company says Smith Cline has written “a powerful, assured, and deeply compassionate debut that earns its ending, offering not a facile happily-ever-after, but a hard-won and deeply satisfying measure of peace.”

Denise Smith Cline's writing has won awards from Carolina Woman, Salem College’s 2014 International Literary Contest, and the 23rd Annual Carteret Writers’ Contest. Her work has appeared in Prime Number, The Shoal, and the Raleigh News & Observer. A graduate of UNC Chapel Hill’s School of Law, Cline has practiced as a lawyer for several decades focusing on employment and healthcare law.
