Deliverance: Spirituals and Testimony is a Black History Month concert recital presenting African American spirituals as concert music, honoring their depth, dignity, and enduring humanity.

Featuring sopranist countertenor Xavier Williams and contralto LaToya Adams, with piano accompaniment by Wayne Helmly, this program explores spirituals not as nostalgia or worship service, but as serious art born of resilience, faith, and hope.

Brief moments of spoken testimony are woven throughout the recital to offer context while allowing the music itself to speak.

This performance is sponsored by the College of Charleston Music Department and takes place in the Albert Simons Center Recital Hall.
