About this Event
The shotgun is one of the most effective and versatile weapons available to the average private citizen or police officer. It is also the least understood and most under-utilized weapon system. Learn how to properly select, modify, feed and operate the defensive shotgun for optimum effectiveness. This intensive one day course will teach you efficient techniques for handling and shooting the shotgun under stressful conditions. Topics covered include:
- Firearms safety, including considerations specific to shotguns
- Historical context and development of the defensive shotgun
- Selection of the fighting shotgun
- Modifications and Accessories
- Ammunition selection and capabilities
- Patterning for optimum performance
- Nomenclature and mechanical operation
- Shooting technique
- Loading/reloading techniques
- Safe storage and ready conditions, including cruiser ready
- Care and maintenance
Required equipment:
- A pump action or semi-automatic 12 or 20 gauge shotgun (12 gauge strongly preferred due to availability of suitable defensive ammunition). The course is designed specifically for these types of shotguns; if you have something exotic like a bullpup shotgun or box magazine 3-gun style shotgun, many of the drills are not going to be suited for your gun, and you won’t get as much out of the class.
- Eye and ear protection (amplified hearing protection strongly encouraged)
- At least 150 rounds of birdshot
- At least 50 rounds of buckshot
- A bag or case used to transport your shotgun to and from your vehicle, the firing line, and the safe area.
Optional equipment:
- Side saddle (receiver-mounted) or buttstock mounted ammunition carriers (highly recommended!!!) or other way to carry spare ammo.
- Amplified hearing protection (we have loaner hearing protection, if needed)
- Towel to cover your shotgun when it is resting on a table or barrel at the firing line, to keep it from becoming scorching hot in the sun
We will have some properly set up loaner shotguns available.
