Even professional painters know that the blank canvas can feel surprisingly intimidating at times, and in this inspiring and messy workshop, the prolific and liberating artist Anne (Boo) Whetter will help you get past that fear and into the joy of making. This is a bring-your-own canvas workshop so you can work in the size and format of your choice, but don’t go any smaller than 12″ – this is about getting hands on, and too small can be a bit constraining.
You’ll start with your own blank canvas and learn how to loosen up the surface using washes of colour, layered marks, and mixed tools. Anne will guide you through building rich, expressive backgrounds using brushes, scrapers, stencils, ink, and collage elements — creating a lively starting point that invites images and ideas to emerge naturally. Magazines and visual prompts will be used to spark inspiration, showing how a painting can grow out of the early layers rather than being fully planned from the start. This is about trusting the process, playing with materials, and discovering how your image can reveal itself from just doing.
Bring a canvas, some lunch (although the cafe next door will be open if you prefer) and wear messy clothes!
Anne is a successful professional artist who has conquered the fear of the blank canvas and produces copious work rich with layers, colour and surreal imagery.
