Our Speakers
Sira Mogas-Díez – Turning Biological Signals into Operational Systems
Sira Mogas-Díez is the Founder and CEO of KOA Biotech, a Barcelona-based deep tech company developing early disease detection systems for aquaculture. A PhD in Biomedicine from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), Sira transitioned from academic research into entrepreneurship with the goal of translating scientific discoveries into practical solutions for the aquaculture industry.
Sira leads a multidisciplinary team of experts in synthetic biology, engineering and data science, united by a shared vision to transform aquaculture through innovation. By combining biotechnology, environmental monitoring and advanced data systems, the team develops technologies that enable earlier disease detection, more stable production and more sustainable aquaculture operations.
Sira was selected as a recipient of the Women TechEU programme, an initiative by the European Commission supporting leading women-founded deep tech startups across Europe. Her work focuses on combining biotechnology, data and environmental monitoring to improve productivity and sustainability in aquaculture systems.
Joy Awad – Applying AI to Scientific and Biomedical Data
Joy Awad is a Senior Artificial Intelligence Engineer at Biorce. She holds a master’s degree in computer science and engineering and specialises in machine learning, deep learning and the broader field of artificial intelligence. With a strong foundation in mathematics, programming and critical thinking, she brings practical experience to research and development projects involving complex data and advanced computational methods.
At Biorce, Joy works on applying artificial intelligence to scientific and biomedical data, helping transform complex datasets into systems that can support research and decision-making. She is particularly interested in exploring novel methods and interdisciplinary approaches that connect artificial intelligence with scientific discovery and technological innovation.
What’s In It For You?
Many of today’s most impactful technologies begin not in software, but in science. From climate modelling to biological monitoring, deep tech companies are increasingly turning complex scientific data into operational systems that help industries make better decisions.
In this DeepTech Talks edition, Sira and Joy will explore:
• How scientific signals, sensors and research models become real-world products
• What it takes to transform uncertain and complex data into usable tools
• How teams translate scientific research into scalable software systems
• The challenges of deploying data-driven technologies where reliability and impact truly matter
Expect a grounded discussion connecting scientific research, engineering and product development, and how deep tech companies transform knowledge into operational technologies.
Who Should Come?
• AI/ML engineers and data scientists
• Product leaders and engineering managers
• Deep tech founders and researchers
• Scientists interested in turning research into products
• Anyone curious about how scientific data becomes real-world technology
