Deep rest: sound bath and yoga relaxation

Join Sleepy Sound Yoga for a special Easter Friday event. Have you ever been to a yoga class and wished that you could repeatedly snooze the savasana? Perhaps you feel like these snatched minutes of relaxation are too short in comparison to the demands of downward dog into chaturanga. Haven't you worked hard enough?

Our mission is simple: to give you the best nap of your life.

Movement
We'll first lay the foundations for soothing our nervous systems with mindful, slow movement. Some of us spend so long working on computers and phones that we can forget that we have a body. Slow movements bring us into connection with the feedback we are receiving all the time from that big bumbling structure of nerves located just beneath our heads.

We use yin yoga in these sessions to counteract the busy-ness of every day life. Each pose may last several minutes, giving you time to feel into the body and become familiar with the sensations. With a variety of props, cushions and blocks, the stretches that make up a yin practice can be attained even if you are a beginner to yoga, or haven't touched your toes since secondary school.

Once we have arrived fully in the body, we will practice yoga nidra - yogic sleep, before we transition into the sound bath.

Sound
Once we've settled the gross body, we can begin on the subtle one. Our daily experience of sound typically comprises music, conversation and clanking noises from the city around us. But it can serve a different purpose.

Much as you may lull a baby to sleep with lullabies, we can let sound relax us. On one hand, the pure sounds from crystal bowls and chimes can focus our attention into the present moment. On the other, rhythmic loops, drones and chanted repeated mantra allow the threat-assessing parts of our minds to predict what's coming, recognise that it's ok, and chill out. And on the other, other hand, the artisan noise and lyrical violin melodies that wash over us, can bring knots to the surface like a baker sifting flour, completing a wave that begins in stress and tension and ends in blissful, silent stillness.

Of course, it's possible to nap by yourself. We trust your napping skills. What we offer, you can consider as a treat, for when you really want to give yourself permission to rest. It's a time for you to connect with yourself, your body and the restorative parts of your being.

We will also serve tea at the end of the session.

Located in London SE1 3XL, our venue provides a serene and welcoming space for you to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

About us:

Together, we are Sleepy Sound Yoga:

Daniel:

"Daniel draws on his experience as a Cambridge-educated engineer and violinist for the band yndi halda to create soundscapes that blend the digital and physical worlds. His intention is to mirror and bring harmony to our lives that oscillate between online and offline spaces. He combines drones, select frequencies and rhythmic loops with crystal bowls, chants and violin melodies, enveloping you in your own personal sound cocoon. His favorite piece of music is Tabula Rasa by Arvo Pärt and his favorite letter is B."

Marina:

"Marina wears many hats, but in both of her careers as a yoga teacher and a non-profit professional her priorities are aligned: nourishing caring, compassionate and loving communities. Deepening the connection between mind and body, Marina's yin classes weave together deep relaxation with an exploration of the deeper philosophy behind the practice. By challenging us to find our yin edge - that sweet spot between bravely facing discomfort and practicing compassion for ourselves - they aim to empower students to re-define the boundaries of what's possible; in their yoga practice and beyond the confines of their mat."
