About this Event

This exhibit is co-sponsored by the BU Office for the Arts and the Howard Thurman Center.

Walk through the second floor of the Harvard Thurman Center to experience beautiful indigo textiles from the collection of Cape Verdean artist Maria Tavares.

Indigo remains a powerful symbol of global connection. As a natural dye derived from agricultural knowledge and traditional craftsmanship, it bridges art, science, and history. Indigo cultivation also reflects the ecological qualities of the legume family, as these plants help replenish nitrogen in the soil and contribute to sustainable agricultural systems. This collection of indigo textiles reflects decades of dedication to preserving and sharing this cultural heritage. Through these works, the history of indigo unfolds not only as a story of color but also as one of migration, trade, labor, and artistic innovation across continents.

Maria Tavares is a native of Cape Verde, an archipelago located off the coast of Senegal. For many years, she has collected indigo-dyed textiles from across West Africa, preserving a rich tradition of craftsmanship, cultural identity, and agricultural knowledge. A significant portion of her collection originates from the historic dyeing center of Kano in northern Nigeria, long known for its communal indigo dye pits and vibrant textile markets. Tavares advocates for the recognition of traditional textile artists and the stories embedded in their work. She also promotes a renewed appreciation for natural dyes and sustainable practices, encouraging contemporary audiences to consider the environmental and cultural value of organic dye traditions.
