SAVE THE DATE!!!The Town of Kirkwood will hold a dedication ceremony for the roadside historic marker, installed as part of the William G. Pomeroy Foundation / Empire State Society Sons of the American Revolution “Patriot Burials” program, at the Layton Cemetery in the Town of Kirkwood on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at 11:00 AM. The cemetery, which is across the road from Frito-Lay, tucked in between TA Truck Service and TA Travel Center on Upper Court Street (US-11), is the final resting place of a Revolutionary War veteran.
THE CEREMONY…
The ceremony will begin at 11:00. It should run ~35-40 minutes. The public is welcome to attend. The Broome County Veterans Memorial Association will provide an Honor Guard, a three-volley salute, and a playing of Taps. There will also be a display of period flags at the event.
THE PROGRAM…
The keynote speaker will be Kirkwood Town Historian Karen Ferguson.

There is one patriot buried at Layton Cemetery:
David Compton (1756 -1805)
Compton served as a private in Capt. Thomas McKinstry's Company of Col. William Malcolm's 1st Regiment of NY Levies July - Oct 1780.
