Decolonizing Gender and Media Analyze gender in our society, how performance aids and intersects and how to decolonize our minds from oppressive systems.
About this Event

Dive into a deep analysis of gender in our society, how performance aids and intersects and how to decolonize our minds from our historic oppressive representation and systems of consumption.

Through the lens of social/media and theory, we engage with these questions:

  • How do trans/genderqueer people engage with sex work at the intersections of gender, media, and the self?
  • How do the socialized structures of gender harm, enrich, or/and seek to destroy our personhood within the context of trans identities?

This 90-minute class will start at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT on Wednesday, October 16.

Required Materials: Read one or both of the pieces below. Both will be discussed, compared, and contrasted.

  • "The Problem with the Negro as a Problem for Gender" - Marquis Bey (very dense)
  • "Beyond the Gender Binary" - Alok Vaid-Menon (easy read)
