About this Event
After General George Washington ordered the Declaration of Independence read aloud to American troops in Manhattan and Brooklyn preparing for a British assault in July 1776, servicemen tore down and cut apart the gilded statue of King George III at Bowling Green. This act shocked the royal families of Europe and continues to serve as a symbol of liberation today.
Join Scholar-in-Residence for a fun, family-friendly reenactment of this historic event in front of the Old Stone House. Visitors will be encouraged to write tyrannies they seek to declare independence from on a re-created statue of King George III.
