Jazz played freely - two sets of songs and tunes from the canon for your listening pleasure.
“Like a high-quality electronic product manufactured by the Panasonic Corporation, the career of
alto saxophonist Michaël Attias has always involved being slightly ahead of his time.”
– Ken Waxman, Jazzword
Michaël Attias has earned a reputation as one of the most questing and keenly collaborative figures on the 21st-century New York jazz scene, with a background and outlook that make him “an emphatically cosmopolitan saxophonist and composer,” according to The New York Times. Migrations spanning North Africa, the Middle East, Western Europe and the American Midwest ultimately brought Attias to New York City in 1994, where he continues to pursue his muse as improviser, composer and bandleader. The Village Voice
described Attias’ music-making as, “perpetually shifting tunes, richness of timbre and a singular personality—you can almost see his music expanding and contracting.” As a leader, he has released eight critically-acclaimed albums, including the 2019 Out Of Your Head release échos la nuit (featuring Attias solo on alto saxophone and piano), and the 2017 Clean Feed debut of Attias’ Nerve Dance quartet. As a sideman, he has performed and recorded all over the world alongside some of today’s most original and compelling musicians, luminaries such as Anthony Braxton, Paul Motian, Oliver Lake, Anthony Coleman, Ralph Alessi, Tony Malaby, Kris Davis and countless others.
Declan Forde is a Scottish pianist - originally from Glasgow - and has been based in Berlin since 2014. He does his best to play with one foot in the tradition and the other in the unknown. This juxtaposition results in a sound that is sometimes definitely Jazz and sometimes definitely not; sometimes very dense and sometimes painfully silent; sometimes melodic and sometimes destructive. Forde does his best to bring a sense of humour and joy to the music - even when he shouldn’t - and hopes that it makes you feel something…even if you don’t really like it. He works often and closely with bassist James Banner in various projects and Lisbon based drummer João Pereira whenever he can.
James Banner (1991) was born in Dudley, England and is now based in Berlin, working as an improvising musician and composer of mainly electro-acoustic music that exists somewhere on the borders improvisation/noise/rock/contemporary music. Current projects include: USINE; commissioning, workshopping/recording/performing new solo pieces for double bass and presenting his solo programme; Borage with Megan Jowett; the collaborative trio Nebbia/Banner/Andrzejewski; Practically Married with Declan Forde; a percussion/bass duo with Sofia Borges and class-work. James is also co-host of B:jazz, the podcast of the IG Jazz Berlin, interviewing local musicians about their work and the social, musical, political situation of the Berlin jazz + improvised music scene.
