About this Event

Death by Sea and Sand – Human Rights Violations en route to the UK

In an era where migration has been reduced to a tired trope for authoritarian political gain, the consequences for those in transit have been devastating. This expert panel seeks to untangle pressing questions surrounding the perilous migration routes across the Sahara and the Mediterranean. Central to this discussion is an exploration why people are driven to risk such perilous journeys, the grim realities they endure en route, and the UK's increasingly troubling role in human rights violations against migrants. The panel will also reflect on the potential pathways for a progressive UK government to navigate these challenges with integrity and justice.

Our speakers include:

  • Dr Giulia Casentini: Researcher at SOAS, specialising in migration across the Mediterranean.
  • Daniel Trilling: Journalist with work featured in The Guardian and The New York Times, renowned for his in-depth reporting on the treatment of refugees across Europe.
  • Bérénice Gaudin: Advocacy Officer for Sea-Watch (online).
  • Mihnea Cuibus: Researcher at the Migration Observatory, whose work focuses on the political dimensions of migration and related policy.

This event is organised by SOAS ICOP. The Influencing the Corridors of Power (ICOP) project is hosted by SOAS University of London. The Project aims to promote the impact of ongoing university-based research. We are proud of SOAS’s record of political engagement and student activism and wish to improve the impact of university staff and students in Government. By bringing researchers and Westminster closer together, we address the democratic deficit which we believe is a result of encroaching government control on freedom of speech and freedom of assembly on SOAS and other campuses.
