On May 18th the Film Festival will, for the first time in over four years, screen a National Theatre Live production in The Globe cinema. We are excited to bring you Dear England, an Olivier-winning play, whose title comes from Gareth Southgate’s "letter to the country" upon his appointment as manager of the England football team. The play follows Southgate as he battles to shape a winning team, including the need to cope with the superhuman levels of pressure in elite sports. Southgate forever changed notions of masculinity, by encouraging his players to talk about their fears - but he inevitably encountered opposition as the England team became a national obsession. Teresa May and Boris Johnson are among many familiar figures who provide comedy in this entertaining new production. The play, which is written by James Graham, opened at the National Theatre in June 2023 to enthusiastic reviews including:
“A theatrical spectacle as uplifting as any England victory” The Telegraph *****
"James Graham scores a winner” Financial Times *****
“Magnificent” The New Statesman *****
Timed as an introduction to the EURO 24 championships which begin in Germany on 14th June, the play does not disappoint. Let us hope that we can say the same about the England team when the tournament is over.
There will be matinee and evening shows, at 2pm and 7pm, all priced at £10 per ticket and these will be on sale at The Globe and Sally’s Newsagents from Saturday 27th April.
