Deaf Awareness Course

Duration: 3 hours (1:00–4:00pm)
Includes: Full‑day co‑working (9:00–5:00pm)

This interactive Deaf Awareness course is designed to give staff the knowledge, confidence and practical skills to communicate effectively and respectfully with Deaf and hard‑of‑hearing colleagues, customers and clients.

Your booking also includes full‑day access to our co‑working space at Merseyway Innovation Centre, allowing you to work before or after the course, continue conversations, or simply enjoy a productive day in a supportive environment.

The session combines insight, discussion and hands‑on activities to help participants better understand Deafness, remove communication barriers and build more inclusive workplaces. No prior experience or knowledge is required.

Understanding Deafness
Explore different types and levels of hearing loss, Deaf culture and identity, and effective ways to communicate with Deaf and hard‑of‑hearing people.

Historical Context
Learn about the history of Deaf education and communication, including when British Sign Language became an officially recognised language in the UK.

Inclusive Communication in Practice
Understand how to approach and communicate respectfully with Deaf or hard‑of‑hearing individuals, including patience, allowing extra time, and working effectively with interpreters when needed.

Workplace Communication Tips
Discover practical ways to improve inclusion at work, such as using assistive technology, reducing background noise, improving lighting and gaining attention appropriately.

Hearing Technology
An overview of hearing aids, cochlear implants and emerging hearing technologies to build understanding and confidence.

Introduction to British Sign Language (BSL)
Learn the fingerspelling alphabet, everyday greetings and take part in practical signing exercises to support basic communication.
