Filmmaker/artist/cartoonist John Michael McCarthy has lived a fascinating life in the world of cult film. After collaborating on the films of Hugh Gallagher; JMM launched his own filmic legacy that included the 8mm masterpiece TEENAGE TUPELO (1995), co-produced by cult film legend DAVID F. FRIEDMAN (SHE FREAK, 2000 MANIACS); as well the first new film ever released on Mike Vraney's SOMETHING WEIRD VIDEO. JMM--already an accomplished cartoonist published by FANTAGRAPHICS at the time--also provided original artwork for other SOMETHING WEIRD video releases.
JMM’s filmography includes DAMSELVIS, DAUGHTER OF HELVIS (1994); TEENAGE TUPELO (1995); THE SORE LOSERS (1997); SUPERSTARLET A.D. (2000); DESTROY MEMPHIS (2016)
As an actor (under pseudonym Dingo Jones), JMM starred in GOROTICA (1993); GORE WHORE (1994), two-thirds of the S.O.V. GORE TRILOGY of filmmaker and accomplished publisher Hugh Gallagher (DRACULINA)
Dead Formats V will serve as the 30th Anniversary Bash for JMM's first film, DAMSELVIS, DAUGHTER OF HELVIS (1994); a shot-on-video rollick made in Memphis and recently released on Bluray by SATURN’S CORE. Saturday night is slated to be dedicated to a film screening, Q&A with the filmmaker/others involved, and more.

HUGH GALLAGHER

The writer/director/producer behind the legendary GORE TRILOGY and DRACULINA PUBLISHING will be appearing as special guest vendor at DF5. Gallagher also mantled the publication of Scream Queens Illustrated for a period; and self-published innumerable titles of his own, including Draculina Magazine, Pinups, Sirens of Cinema, Mean (a MAD-alternative), Oriental Cinema, She, Skin (w/ Linnea Quigley), and more.
Gallagher parlayed his publication biz into a film career, directing DEAD SILENCE in 1989; then embarking on the infamous shot-on-video Gore Trilogy: GORGASM (1990), GOROTICA (1993) and GORE WHORE (1994). His next film, EXPLODING ANGEL (1995) starred Gunnar Hansen and Scott Shaw.
Gallagher spent time collaborating with JESS FRANCO and LINA ROMAY in Spain and the UK; producing five of Franco’s his films over the course of two years--TENDER FLESH (1997), LUST FOR FRANKENSTEIN (1998), MARI-COOKIE AND THE KILLER TARANTULA (1998), VAMPIRE BLUES (1999) and DR. WONG'S VIRTUAL HELL (1999).
Gallagher also essential in the mail-order distribution of obscure film/VHS/publications/comics in the early 1990’s; and will be bringing some inventory with him to DEAD FORMATS V

ERIN BROWN

With over 100 acting credits, Erin Brown has been one of the largest stars in independent and outsider film for over two decades--having effectively held her audience captive in ways that no other actress of her generation can boast.
Previously performing as MISTY MUNDAE, Brown has proven herself a dynamic force in some of the most sought-after, direct-to-video releases amongst tape collecting communities. Under the Mundae moniker, Brown collaborated on DR. JACKYLL & MISTRESS HYDE (2003), LUST FOR DRACULA (2004), SINFUL (2006), and CHANTAL (2007)--several of which were shot on 35MM by director Tony Marsiglia.
In 2022, Brown collaborated with Dayton filmmaker Victor Bonacore under the mantle of their production company, TRANZIENT PICTURES, on the punk epic THRUST. The feature--cowritten and starring Brown--later received a special limited VHS release from LUNCHMEAT.
Other works include SICK GIRL (2006), DEAD BY MIDNIGHT (2018) and its 2022 sequel, IN THE WALL (2007), and THE LOST (2006).

We are proud to announce an evening screening of 2024 Guest of Honor JMM’s first film DAMSELVIS (1994), a surreal Elvisploitation epic shot on video in Memphis and adapted from JMM’s comic book of the same name. Run Time: 63 Minutes
Film followed by a live Q&A with writer-director JMM and other cast/crew; as well as a live musical performance by Paul Woodard aka POLI SCI CLONE—musician and star of DAMSELVIS and GORE WHORE. More DAMSELVIS' 30th Bash details TBA in coming weeks, including a convention-exclusive VHS release and exclusive merch featuring JMM's original Damselvis artwork created especially for the event.
