NL | Het verleden botst met ons heden in Steve McQueens gedurfde documentaire 'De bezette stad'. De film is geïnspireerd op het boek 'Atlas van een Bezette Stad Amsterdam 1940-1945' van Bianca Stigter. McQueen creëert twee in elkaar grijpende portretten: het ene toont van deur tot deur de nazibezetting die de stad nog steeds achtervolgt. Het andere is een levendige reis door de laatste jaren van pandemie en protest. McQueen toont ons de straten, grachten, pleinen, gebouwen en steigers waar de barbaarsheid plaatsvond – maar toont ze zoals ze nu zijn, met mensen uit de 21e eeuw die hun gang gaan, terwijl de voice-over op koele wijze samenvat wat er op elke specifieke plek is gebeurd. Wat in de ruim 4 uur naar voren komt, is zowel verpletterend als hoopgevend, een verreikende meditatie over geheugen, tijd en wat er in het verschiet ligt.
Samen met het Amsterdamse 4 en 5 mei comité nodigen wij op 4 mei alle Amsterdammers uit om op het grote doek naar deze unieke documentaire te kijken en samen te reflecteren en herdenken. De film is deze middag ook op vijf andere locaties te zien:

EN | The past collides with our present in Steve McQueen's bold documentary 'Occupied City'. Inspired by Bianca Stigter's book 'Atlas of an Occupied City: Amsterdam 1940-1945,' the film creates two interlocking portraits: one meticulously depicting the Nazi occupation door to door, haunting the city to this day, and the other a vibrant journey through the recent years of pandemic and protest. McQueen showcases the streets, canals, squares, buildings, and docks where barbarity occurred—but presents them as they are now, inhabited by 21st-century people going about their lives, while the voice-over calmly summarizes what happened at each specific location. What emerges over the span of more than 4 hours is both crushing and hopeful, a profound meditation on memory, time, and what lies ahead.
On May 4th, together with Amsterdamse 4 en 5 mei comité, we invite alle Amsterdammers to gather and watch this unique documentary on a big screen, to reflect and commemorate together. The film will also be screened in five other venues this afternoon:
