DCEFF | The Floating World & Okiku and the World

Presented by the Japan Information & Culture Center, Embassy of Japan as part of the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital.

Step back in time to the Edo period (1603-1868) and delve into Japan's rich history of environmentalism! Join us for a captivating journey as part of the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital, where we explore the vibrant city of Edo, known today as Tokyo.

Kicking off the evening with the short film, The Floating World.

Follow a university student grappling with an environmental studies assignment as she embarks on a quest for inspiration at an art gallery. Transported into a mesmerizing painting, she finds herself immersed in 19th-century Edo, witnessing a tapestry of sustainable practices that once saved Japan from environmental catastrophe. From using ashes in dyeing to repurposing kimonos, discover the ingenious solutions of the past that echo through the ages.

Following this captivating short, we present the feature film, Okiku and the World.

Chuji (SATO Kanichiro) and Yasuke (IKEMATSU Sosuke) are the resilient "manure men" who turn toilets into treasure, selling excrement as fertilizer despite facing public scorn. Amidst the stench and struggles, Chuji meets Okiku (KUROKI Haru), the daughter of a fallen samurai. This unexpected encounter sparks a tender love story chronicling resilience, romance, and redemption in the heart of Edo.

Join us on March 28th at the JICC! Doors open at 6:00 PM, and the film begins at 6:30 PM.
